Preclinical Toxicology

Acute, Subacute, Subchronic, and Chronic Toxicology Studies utilizing a variety of laboratory animal models are conducted at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. The Comparative Medicine Facility is fully AAALAC accredited with support facilities and services provided by Loyola Medical Laboratories and the University of Illinois BRL Laboratories.

Loyola Medical Laboratories and the University of Illinois BRL Laboratories are fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and comply with state and federal regulatory standards. Histopathology and tissue preparation services are performed by 7th Wave Laboratories, INC.


With two convenient locations, Tox Monitor/BSR routinely conducts 28, 90, and 180 day studies as well as 2 year carcinogenicity studies utilizing a variety of animal models inculding rodent and non-rodent species. Areas of speciality include Repeat Vaginal Irritation studies for anti-STD products, Repeat Dose Canine Studies by various dosing routes, and most recently Chronic Dermal Toxicity Studies utilizing the new Ellegaard mini-pig. This new mini-pig species is excellent for topical studies because of their docility, small size at maturity, and non-pigmented skin. All studies are conducted in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices. (GLP)

Areas of specialty include Dermal and Ocular Irritation, Dermal and Oral Toxicity, Inhalation Toxicity, Dermal Sensitization, Mucosal Irritation (vaginal, penile, and oral), USP/ISO Medical Device Testing.
